After completing orthodontic treatment, using a retainer is very important. In this article, we discuss different types of retainers, proper usage, duration of use, and their importance in maintaining treatment results.

Introduction

Many patients think that after removing braces, the work is done. But the reality is that using a retainer is one of the most important parts of treatment!

In this article, we discuss the importance of retainers, their types, and proper usage.

Section 1: Why Do We Need a Retainer?

After removing braces, teeth tend to return to their previous position. This is a natural phenomenon called "relapse".

Causes of Tooth Relapse:

  • Tissue Memory: Tissues around teeth (ligaments and gums) tend to return to their previous state
  • Jaw Growth: In teenagers, the jaw is still growing and may change
  • Oral Habits: Like tongue thrusting or mouth breathing that can move teeth
  • Natural Aging: With age, teeth naturally shift slightly

Important Note: Without using a retainer, all your efforts and costs may be wasted and teeth may become misaligned again!

Section 2: Types of Retainers

1. Fixed Retainer

A thin wire that is bonded behind front teeth (usually lower jaw).

Advantages:

  • Always in place and you can't forget it
  • Invisible (behind teeth)
  • Effective for preventing relapse

Disadvantages:

  • Harder to clean
  • May break or become loose
  • Requires more care

2. Removable Retainer

Can be removed for eating and cleaning.

Advantages:

  • Easy to clean
  • Can be removed when needed
  • More comfortable

Disadvantages:

  • May be lost or forgotten
  • Requires patient cooperation
  • May break if not handled carefully
